Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Choir delights unsuspecting shoppers

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is putting Nelson Mandela Bay on the map thanks to its successful staging of a flash mob in the city, the footage of which has now gone viral.

The international award-winning NMMU choir recently gave an impromptu performance of popular songs to the delight of unsuspecting shoppers at Greenacres Shopping Centre – and it’s now being shared around the globe, thanks to a posting on YouTube.

Though staged to promote the closing date for undergraduate studies at the institution in 2012, the viral marketing of the song-and-dance routine has much wider benefits – like that of simply promoting both NMMU and Nelson Mandela Bay generally.

“This five-minute video takes us to places we have never been, and introduces us to audiences who might never have heard of us,” says NMMU’s Marketing and Corporate Relations Director Pieter Swart.

“It certainly profiles us – and the city – as a go-getting, fun place to be.”
